It may be hard to see your teeth with your braces on. However, it is vitally important that you continue to take care of your teeth while you wear your braces.
First, while you will see your orthodontist on a regular basis, you will still need to keep your regular dental appointments for cleanings and exams. In the meantime, you need to stay on top of your brushing and flossing routine.
Normally, you should brush your teeth twice a day. While wearing braces, you should brush at least three times a day, especially after meals. Before you start to brush, rinse your mouth with water. That will help remove or loosen any pieces of food around your braces. Hold the bristles of the your brush at a 45-degree angle and start by brushing at the gumline, then brush the top of your brackets, followed by the bottom the brackets and the wire. You should take your time, and brush two or three teeth at a time.
Flossing your teeth may take a little practice. If you have find yourself having problems getting the floss around your braces, you can try using a floss threader, a soft pick or a water flosser. Your orthodontist can help if you run into problems flossing.
